Community Service

Community service plays an important role at My Girlfriend’s House. We are rooted in the idea of giving back to contribute to the growth of our communities. This is bestowed upon each teen girl who enrolls in our programs.

Throughout the year, we host major community initiatives that impact and empower homeless and at-risk women and children in the DC Metropolitan area. While the Prince George’s County schools only requires students to collect 75 hours of community service in order to graduate, our girls can receive over 60 hours of community service each year. Each month, the girls lead projects that contribute to making our community a better place, while learning the true meaning of giving.

The personal benefits of our community service projects:

  • Develops an increased sense of social responsibility.
  • Exposes girls to diversity and multiculturalism.
  • Provides an opportunity to apply academic learning to real human needs.
  • Improves communication and critical thinking skills.
The college admissions benefits of our community service projects:

  • Helps the girls stand out among other applicants- admissions officers want well rounded students who volunteer. Service work is a leading decision-making factor after a student’s GPA and SAT scores.
  • Provides a topic of interest for college essays- places an emphasis on “why” and “how” a student has tackled an issue.
The Career Benefits of Teen Volunteering:

  • Helps girls find their passions and interests that may lead to a career choice they may have not considered.
  • Helps develop lifelong interpersonal and communication skills.

The rewards can be multiple: through our community service, our teen girls build civic responsibility while identifying their skills, values, and important role helping address community needs. By engaging in volunteer work, our girls have an opportunity to learn experientially. They discover where their passions lie while undertaking “feel good” projects that truly make a difference. These experiences allow them to make more informed choices about college and career options as well as instilling a lifelong interest in giving back.
