Cover Girl Beauty:

A Lesson in Self-Esteem

Our physical self-image plays an important role in how others perceive us, and thus, how we perceive ourselves. Feeling physically beautiful or attractive can have a direct effect on an individual’s sense of self-esteem. In turn, low self-esteem can lead to depression, poor performance in school, and poor physical health. Research indicates that those suffering from depression are twice as likely to drop out of college, have more difficulty sleeping regularly, and are more likely to suffer from other chronic illnesses.

Two creative workshops offered at My Girlfriend’s House, Strut Like a Model and Diva Style, devote themselves to helping girls combat a negative self-image while empowering teenage girls to feel as beautiful as any diva out there. Many impoverished young girls don’t grow up in a household where one’s physical appearance gets the attention it requires. Maybe the money simply isn’t there to allow for the necessary cosmetic care, or they don’t have a mother’s touch to teach them proper style and grace. Our mentors step in to assist the girls with all of the ins and outs of looking their best and having the moves to match, helping uplift the self-esteem and self worth of the students.

Diva Style offers tips and help on:

  • Fashion
  • How to best dress for their body type
  • Makeup and cosmetic tips
  • How to style their hair just right for the right occasion

Strut Like a Model offers tips and help on:

  • Poise and attitude
  • Proper etiquette/ Etiquette training
  • Self-worth and dignity

“I have seen a huge improvement since Angela first enrolled into MGH’s mentoring program,” says Veronica Rogers, mother of one of the Girl Talk students. “The way she carries herself has improved greatly and her confidence continues to rise. Her ongoing participation in the organization’s image and personal appearance workshops has encouraged Angela to take more pride in her physical appearance and gives her the confidence she needs to feel beautiful inside and out.”

When a girl understands what it means to have cover girl beauty, she understands that one doesn’t have to conform to society’s vision of beauty and physical attractiveness: every girl is made beautiful. The program ultimately allows the girls learn to accept themselves for who they are — that they were made masterpieces and that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
