According to a new report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness an estimated 13,205 homeless people live in the Washinton, DC metropolitan area, making it the fifth largest homeless population in the country. Of this number, children account for 25%, causing the city to have the highest rate of child poverty. This issue makes it difficult for parents and guardians to provide the everyday, essential necessities for their family.

What we give and need |
To help support the needs of the many men, women and children living in homelessness, My Girlfriend’s House created several outreach initiatives that provide food, furniture, clothes, and even a little hope to those living in homeless shelters or on the streets of Washington, DC. The Shelter Room Makeover PartyThe Shelter Room Makeover Party is an outreach effort designed to uplift women living in homeless shelters by renovating their rooms into hotel-styled suites. Volunteers and mentees come together to participate in a complete room overhaul, including: purchasing new home décor, painting, hanging wall paper, buying new furniture, and more! >>Click here to read more<< Street OutreachOur Street Outreach supports the men and women living in homelessness on the streets of Washington, DC. This day long outreach effort allows My Girlfriend’s House volunteers and mentees to hand out warm bedding items from our d-Store and a hot meal to those living on the streets. Personal Care and Household DonationsShelters benefit greatly from our d-Store and Purse String donation efforts. Select homeless centers have the opportunity to shop through the many household, clothing, and personal care items offered in our d-Store. The Purse String for My Girlfriends Drive supports women and girls living in shelters by supplying them with gently used and new purses filled with over 15 personal care items. We commit to these efforts year-round to ensure the shelters have an adequate amount of supplies to satisfy their residents. |
