My Girlfriends House, Inc Adopts Girl Talk Mentoring Program

My Girlfriends House, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, will mentor at-risk teenage girls using the nationally recognized Girl Talk curriculum.

Upper Marlboro, Maryland (August 24, 2011) Volunteers from My Girlfriends House, Inc. will use the nationally recognized Girl Talk program to mentor at-risk young at several area high schools throughout the upcoming school year.

“Girl Talk is used by tens of thousands of girls and young women in 43 states,” said My Girlfriends House Executive Director, Veronica Eyenga. “We’re excited to use it as the basis for our mentoring program.”

My Girlfriends House is working with the principals at high schools in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC to identify at-risk young women who could benefit from year-long mentoring. Selected young women at each high school will participate in monthly mentoring workshops, as well as one-on-one mentoring sessions.

“We want to help prepare young women for success in college, in the workplace, and in life,” Eyenga noted. “The Girl Talk curriculum covers many of the issues, such as decision making, peer pressure, career preparation and other topics that are critical for the young women we’ll be mentoring.”

Young women who successfully complete the free mentoring program will be eligible for scholarships given by My Girlfriends House, and some of the organization’s members will provide internships to deserving participants when available.

Mentoring is just one of the community services My Girlfriends House provides: the organization also gives designer purses filled with health and beauty aids, as well as school supplies and clothing, to young ladies ages 12-18.
