Think back to your childhood. Did you have someone there to help guide you through tough situations? How about a shoulder to cry on or an older person to turn to for advice? Being a mentor is one of the most rewarding and charismatic roles you can provide to a young child in need of guidance. You may not realize how much it means, but to someone that does not have a strong, helpful person in their life that understands their problems and is willing to help in any way, it means the world.

It’s not easy being a young girl. Between peer pressure, developing self-esteem, trying to understand who you are and what your purpose is, dealing with guys, and making it through middle and high school, it can be pretty tough. It’s nothing better than having a positive role model that you can turn to when life seems confusing. You can be that difference in a young girl’s life.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste—and so is the experience that comes from being able to say “been there, done that.” We are always in need of mentors. It doesn’t take much; just a gentle spirit, a patient heart and the desire to want to help someone else thru the struggles that you may have faced growing up.

Your words of helpful advice, listening ear, and positive reinforcements can help these young ladies through very tough times in their lives. All it takes is a little time and dedication.

We offer two types of mentoring opportunities:

The Classroom Mentors are female, adult volunteers that help us ensure each workshop is ran smoothly. Along with leading group activities, the classroom mentor will also assist with lesson preparation, interact with the mentees, and provide additional assistance during field trips and fundraisers. Classroom mentors offer leadership and guidance to the mentees within the workshop environment only. There is no correspondence with Girl Talk participants outside of the classroom. Anyone interested in volunteering as a classroom mentor is required to make a minimum time commitment of 2 hours every 2 weeks for one year. If you are able to volunteer more time, that’s awesome! We welcome classroom mentors to join us each weekend during our mentoring workshops.

The iMentors are virtual mentors, dedicated to providing additional guidance to our mentees in-between workshops. The iMentor works with students via the phone to follow up on topics discussed in class, help with personal issues, and provide an additional outlet for our young divas when they need to talk, get advice, or simply vent. These virtual mentors must make a commitment of one hour every week to speak with their assigned mentee. It will be up to the mentor and the mentee to agree upon the specific day and time of the mentoring phone calls.
