My Girlfriend’s House presents Girl Talk - a mentoring program designed to assist middle and high school girls learn the skills they’ll need to succeed in college, life, and the business world. Through weekly mentoring workshops, community service projects, and career building activities, we empower our young divas to strive to be their best in their professional and personal lives.
The Girl Talk Mentoring program is a vocational leadership skills development program focused on building a positive understanding of self-worth and confidence through group mentoring, life skills training, career & academic planning and community change. We integrate proper etiquette, accountability, self-representation and self-respect, into every workshop and community outreach project.
The program works with young ladies to explore basic skills that are easily transferable to the workplace. They undertake a process of self-discovery that result in them exploring educational institutions and careers that represent their interests and needs, while being required to contribute positively to the community through volunteerism. Students work on various tasks to explore their identities and to tell their stories: who they are, what challenges them and how we can help them make changes.
There is a final graduation event organized in the community upon program completion that showcases accomplishments of the students as well as award scholarships to those students in the 12th grade with GPAs of 3.5 and above.
Over a 10 month calendar that runs concurrent with the school year, we work with 30-35 at-risk girls on identifying, developing and implementing projects in their communities.
Feedback about the program from students, staff, parents, and community members has been extremely encouraging, as each recognizes the impact we have had on girls as well as the positive influence on the community. One of our students recently said: “This program gives us a chance to speak our minds. It gives us a place to share our knowledge with the world. It not only helps us feel like what we say can make a difference, it also gives us a chance to make that difference.”
Girl Talk is a nationally accredited mentoring program that facilitates positive group meetings, community service projects and friendship building activities for middle and high school young ladies. Lead by members of My Girlfriend’s House the program is designed to help develop key leadership skills they will use throughout life.
Girl Talk reaches more than 30,000 in 27 states each week during the school year.
The Girl Talk mentoring program is designed to serve a fast-growing part of our community: at-risk middle and high school girls living in DC, Virginia and Maryland. All served to date have been low-income (90%) and the majority are from single parent or foster households (60%) homeless or transient (25%), and adjudicated or institutionalized in some manner, including those on probation or under the supervision of juvenile services (5%).
The Saint Joseph Health Care System of Humboldt County, CA recently commissioned a study designed to assess and describe pressing community needs. The study listed as high-priority community concerns ‘educational support and dropout prevention services’ for impoverished, at-risk youth. Other needs identified by the study for local at-risk youth included recreation and social opportunities, life-skills training, interpersonal communications skills as well as the ability to work with technology.
The Girl Talk Mentoring program not only provides these learning skills to students, but the Program also ensures the students are ready for the working world by introducing them professional women working in a variety of industries in our region.
Through open forum, projects, community service activities, we aim to empower teenage girls build self-esteem, develop their strengths and leadership abilities, live up to their highest potential and motivate each other to become more influential voices in their community.
The workshops include:
We want our girls to strong, smart, and motivated and this program provides them with the necessary tools and resources to do it.
There is so much that we do with our mentees throughout the year and all of it is possible only because of the support we continuously receive from the community. Please help us continue to have the resources to do more with the ladies. From field trips to educational materials to food and basic needs support, the Girl Talk Mentoring program is committed to helping our girls remain academically focused.
Please help us in this quest by making a donation to ensure we always have the funds to get what is needed. For just $25, you could help us provide much needed assistance to the young ladies in our community who are looking at us to help make a difference. It really DOES take a village.
