For many of the girls enrolled in My Girlfriend’s House Girl Talk Mentoring Program, life is often full of challenges. Many of these same girls have shown great strength of spirit, excelling in life even when adversity remains a constant foe. We emphasize to the girls that taking charge of responsibilities and remaining focused, both professionally and academically, are traits that help define a strong, independent woman. My Girlfriend’s House created the Sassy Senior Scholarship Fund in order to reward and encourage our mentees that manage to achieve academic excellence during their senior year. What makes these students sassy? The term in not used in a negative way; instead it represents their confident and determined attitudes. It’s their ability to focus on academics while maintaining positive and overcoming all the obstacles of school. Maintaining good grades while balancing life’s obstacles can prove taxing, so we want to make sure our girls have their achievements properly celebrated and rewarded. Though our scholarships cannot pay for tuition in full, they help in many of the areas important to new college students, including books, clothing, and items for the dorm. Scholarship funds are made possible through personal donations from board members who would like for every mentee to view the scholarship as a special goal for those who work hard to obtain it. Mentees with overall high school GPAs of 3.5 or higher and who have been accepted into an academic institution of higher learning qualify for scholarships.
